VME bus (Versa Module Europa) is a flexible open-ended bus system which was introduced
by Motorola, Phillips, Thompson, and Mostek in 1981. The VME bus was intended to
be a flexible environment supporting a variety of computing intensive tasks, and
has become a very popular protocol in the computer industry.
In many cases, the VMEbus system design has been tailored to support specialized
applications in Industrial controls, Military, Aerospace, Transportation, Telecom,
Medical and many other embedded electronics applications. The large installed base
and controlled open specifications make this technology popular in variety of industries.
That is why, nearly 30 years since its introduction, the VMEbus continues to be
the most popular modular instrumentation platform in the industry today.
VTI Instruments has been manufacturing and supporting VME bus products for many
years, and withstands its promise for product longevity. Rugged hardware implementation
makes our VME bus products a default choice for applications such as F16 flightline
test.
Key Contributors for VME bus popularity:
- Large Install base & proven applications
- Large number of Vendors still supporting VME bus products
- Easy integration into custom embedded system implementation
- Controlled and Open standards maintained by VITA organization
- Processor / Operating system independent architecture
- Low cost of development and certification
- Continuous evolution of standards in pace with industry needs
